چکیده

IceCube, a cubic kilometer detector at the South Pole, is the largest neutrino telescope currently taking data. Utilizing the transparent ice of Antarctica as a detection medium, IceCube digital optical sensors observe Cherenkov radiation from secondary particles produced in neutrino interactions inside or near the detector. Charged current nμ interactions create muon tracks, while charged current ne interactions, and neutral current interactions of all flavors initiate electromagnetic and hadronic showers (cascades). The background coming from atmospheric muons and muon bundles is many orders of magnitude larger than the cascade signal and makes it difficult to observe cascades. However, cascades have better energy resolution and lower atmospheric neutrino background compared to track-like events. The energy spectrum of extraterrestrial neutrinos is expected to be harder than that of atmospheric neutrinos. Thus using cascade events to search for a hardening of the energy spectrum is advantageous compared to using muon tracks. The search for extraterrestrial neutrino-induced cascades with energies in the tens of TeV to a few PeV neutrino energy range using improved reconstruction methods will be presented. The analysis uses 317 days of livetime of the data taken from May 2010 to May 2011 when 79 IceCube strings were operational. IceCube Observatory: Neutrinos and the Origin of Cosmic Rays

The completed IceCube Observatory, the first km neutrino telescope, is already providing the most stringent limits on the flux of high energy cosmic neutrinos from point-like and diffuse galactic and extra-galactic sources. The nondetection of extra-terrestrial neutrinos has important consequences on the origin of the cosmic rays. Here the current status of astrophysical neutrino searches, and ...

Particle Physics in Ice with IceCube DeepCore

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is the world’s largest high energy neutrino telescope, using the Antarctic ice cap as a Cherenkov detector medium. DeepCore, the low energy extension to IceCube, is an infill array with a fiducial volume of around 30 MTon in the deepest, clearest ice, aiming for an energy threshold as low as 10 GeV and extending IceCube’s sensitivity to indirect dark matter sear...

Sensitivity of the IceCube Detector for Ultra-High Energy Electron-Neutrino Events

IceCube is a neutrino telescope currently under construction in the glacial ice at South Pole. At the moment half of the detector is installed, when completed it will instrument 1 km3 of ice providing a unique experimental setup to detect high energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources. In this work the sensitivity of the complete IceCube detector for a diffuse electron-neutrino flux is analyz...

The First Year IceCube-DeepCore Results

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory includes a tightly spaced inner array in the deepest ice, called DeepCore, which gives access to low-energy neutrinos with a sizable surrounding cosmic ray muon veto. Designed to be sensitive to neutrinos at energies as low as 10 GeV, DeepCore will be used to study diverse physics topics with neutrino signatures, such as dark matter annihilations and atmospheric...

Getting there: from AMANDA to IceCube

AMANDA is a neutrino telescope consisting of 677 optical modules embedded at 1.5-2 km depth in the ice cap under the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station. In this contribution we summarize AMANDA results on measuring the atmospheric neutrino spectrum, on searches for a neutrino flux from the galactic plane, for a diffuse and point-like flux of cosmic high energy neutrinos and searches for dark mat...
